Beno Book Scholarships

“Beno” is one of the nicknames given to Bernard McHerron Sr. by his loved ones. He was affectionately known and referred to as “Beno” everywhere he went. Beno was a firm believer in education. After college he began working for the Harvey Public School District in Illinois as a teacher’s assistant. When his career started to take a different turn in his life, he still continued to mentor within his role of assistant basketball coach, donating a lot of his time assisting young basketball players in public schools. Students confided in him and would even stop by his home to get direction with their lives. He would always say that he wanted to make a difference in at least one child’s life, and was saddened that a lot of students didn’t have the necessary tools they needed to succeed. To keep Beno’s dream alive of helping students succeed, The Bershé Hope Foundation will give away four (4) book/ school activity scholarships annually to children and young adults who have lost their parent or step-parent(s).

Fall / Winter 2024 School Year Awards

2024 ESSAY SUBJECT:

How do you feel about the death penalty? Do you think in some cases it is morally justified?

AWARDS:

College/ University Students-

(2) Scholarship Awards- $1000- first place; $500- second place

High-School Students-

(1) Scholarship Award- $350

Middle/Junior High Students Grades 5th-8th

(1) Scholarship Award- $200

RULES:

Entries:

No purchase necessary. To be eligible you must be a middle/junior, high school student, or, college/university student or planning to attend college within the academic year of submitting the entry. BERSHÉ is not responsible for lost, damaged or incomplete entries. Only one entry per person allowed. Duplicate entries may result in disqualification. By submitting your entry you agree to abide by the rules and decision(s) of BERSHÉ.

Award Claims:

Once a winner is selected, an award letter will be sent by BERSHÉ within 15 days to the address that appears on the application entry form. The winner is responsible to contact BERSHÉ within thirty days of the post mark of the reward claim letter. To claim the prize the winner must follow the instructions included in the reward claim letter. If the winner has not responded within 30 days of the post mark of the reward claim letter, the prize will be fortified and another winner will be selected. Proof of school enrollment, current grade and parental loss is required in order to be considered as a valid claim. If the winner is not enrolled at the time of winning, but is planning to attend within the academic school year of winning, he/she must provide proof of enrollment in order to be considered a valid claim.

Check Process:

Upon receiving a valid claim for a scholarship award, a check will be issued to the winner and will be sent to the mailing address that appears on the application entry form unless the winner provides a written request to send the check to a different address before the check is issued.

Award checks must be used at the time they are received and may not be reissued once the check expires.

Award checks are non-transferable.

About Rules:

These rules are subject to change at the discretion of BERSHÉ without prior notification. Anyone who fills out the Application Entry Form agrees to accept and abide by these rules and agrees to allow BERSHÉ to post his/her name on the BERSHÉ website if he/she is a Scholarship winner. In an event of dispute, BERSHÉ’s decisions are final.

Use of the scholarship funds are at the sole discretion of the winner(s).
